Who digitizes old family photos, slides and VHS tapes in Los Angeles?

Picturli is a photo organization, archiving and design studio in Los Angeles. Our team digitizes printed photos, albums, scrapbook pages, slides, negatives, VHS and MiniDV tapes, and audio recordings. Then we organize every file chronologically, back it up, and deliver it as a family archive you can search.

Not a scanning service, a full-service memory studio. We work with collections from the 1800s to last Tuesday.

That's the short answer. The longer one matters more, because the better question is who can take every format in your boxes and hand it back in a form your family will actually open.

Your collection is probably more than one format

I want to tell you something about almost every collection that comes into our studio. It is rarely just a box of prints.

It's albums from the 70s. A carousel of slides from a road trip. Negatives in envelopes from a drugstore that closed years ago. A shoebox of VHS tapes labeled in someone's handwriting. A drawer of MiniDV cassettes from the year somebody bought a camcorder.

Three or four decades, stacked on top of each other.

That mix is why so many DIY projects stall halfway. The prints get scanned. The tapes go back in the closet for four more years. The negatives never get touched.

When one studio takes the whole collection, you get one plan, one team and one archive at the end.

Everything else happens in our studio. Film reels are the one format we send out, to trusted vendors we work with. They can deliver any file type you need, from ProRes to MP4, at resolutions from 2K up to 16K, which is large enough for a movie screen. The reels then come back into our studio and join the rest of your family archive.

Why I prefer a local studio for this work

Mail-in services are built for volume. You ship a box, a machine scans it, and a folder of files comes back. For a small stack of clean prints, that can be fine. For a family archive, it falls short.

Before you hand over anything you cannot replace, check four things:

  • Where your originals go. With a local studio, you can drive over and see your collection. With a national mail-in service, your only copy travels through a shipping network twice.

  • Who handles the hard formats. Tapes and audio need equipment most households no longer own. Ask who does that work and how your originals are tracked while they are out of your hands.

  • Whether organization is in the quote. Naming, dating, folder structure and duplicate removal are what make the files usable. If they are missing, you are paying for the first step only.

  • Whether anyone looked before quoting. A price given sight unseen is a guess. Mold, curled prints and broken cassettes all change the scope.

Six questions to ask any studio

  1. Will you look at my collection before giving me a project price?

  2. What resolution will each format be scanned at?

  3. Which formats do you transfer in house, and which go to a partner?

  4. How will my files be named, dated and organized when they come back?

  5. How do you handle damaged, moldy or fragile items?

  6. What is excluded from the quote, and what would change it?

A studio that answers all six without hesitating is showing you its process. For what it's worth, here is one of our answers: we scan photos and album pages at 600 ppi, and slides and negatives at 4000 ppi.

How a project runs with us

  1. A complimentary consultation. You tell me about your family, where the photos live, and what you hope to do with them.

  2. Gather and inventory. We collect everything, from closets, garages and cloud accounts, and take a full inventory. Your plan is built on what is actually in the boxes.

  3. Catalog and organize. We work chronologically, using every clue you have kept. This is why I ask clients to leave the albums intact. An album already holds dates and order.

  4. Scan and transfer. Prints, albums, slides and negatives are scanned. Tapes and audio are transferred and cleaned.

  5. Make it searchable. Every file is renamed, dated in its metadata (not only in the file name), and tagged with names, places and events.

  6. Box the originals. Your physical collection comes back in archival boxes, labeled so you can find things again.

  7. Deliver the archive. Your family vault, plus anything you would like from our design studio: a photo book, a family website, a legacy film.

Why two quotes for the same boxes look so different

Two studios can look at the same collection and give you very different numbers. Volume is only part of it.

  • The format mix. An hour of VHS takes longer to transfer well than an hour of flatbed scanning.

  • Condition. Water damage, mold and brittle prints need careful hands that a production line cannot give them.

  • Organization. This is the biggest variable and the one most quotes leave out. Scanning a thousand photos is one job. Dating and structuring them so your grandchildren can find their great-grandmother's wedding is a much larger one.

  • Design. A photo book or family website is not part of a scanning quote, but it is often what people wanted when they started.

What to look for in a studio

You do not need to be technical to tell a good studio from a quick one. A good studio asks about your family before it asks about your file count. It can show you archives from real projects. It tells you what it does not do. It has a physical studio. It talks about backup without being asked.

I'm a Certified Professional Photo Organizer, and every person on my team has been with me at least three years. I tell you that because this work depends on judgment, and judgment takes time to build.

Frequently asked questions

Who digitizes old family photos, slides and VHS tapes in Los Angeles? Picturli is a Los Angeles studio that digitizes photos, scrapbook pages, slides, negatives, VHS and MiniDV tapes, and audio recordings, then organizes everything into one searchable family archive.

Can slides, negatives and tapes be done in one project? Yes, and it is usually the better choice. Separate vendors return separate sets of files with different naming, which makes one archive much harder to build later.

Do I have to bring my collection to you? No. We offer concierge pickup in Los Angeles, so your collection comes to the studio with us.

What happens to my originals? You get every original back, in archival boxes. The digital archive protects them from being handled again.

How long does a project take? Timing comes down to volume, formats and condition. You receive a timeline with your proposal, after we have seen the collection.

Let's talk about your collection

If you have boxes in the garage, a carousel of slides, or a shelf of tapes you have been meaning to deal with for years, start with a conversation.

Book a complimentary consultation, tell me what you have, and we will talk through what a project could look like for your family.
